OUR TOP FIVE FAVORITE FINDS AT THE SOUKS IN MARRAKESH

A highlight of our Marrakesh retreats is enjoying a guided day in the medina. The traditional Arab markets, or souks, of the Marrakesh medina are renowned around the world for the exotic and ageless experience. Souks are organized into areas specializing in different things. There are souks for spices, olives, musical instruments, antiques, crafts, wools and silks, and even brass lanterns. Our guide leads guests through an introduction to the souks, artisans and we have the afternoon to shop and discover truly one of a kind pieces to bring back home with us.

RUGS - We are always so inspired by the color and patterns of Moroccan rugs. Traditionally made by Amazigh women, each tribe has its own style and colors that allow a keen eye to immediately identify where the pieces hail from. Wedding blankets are another favorite. The Moroccan Wedding Blanket or handira is a blanket that is worn by the bride, tied to her neck like a cape, on her wedding day. Sarah, our guest coordinator, has one displayed beautifully on her wall (look below for photo;)

SPICES AND OILS - Fragrant aromas and bright colors are what characterize Moroccan spices. Saffron, turmeric, cumin, and ras al hanout are among the best spices you can buy in Marrakech souks. Spices make an inexpensive and easy gift to transport, and you can buy them both whole or ground. Argan oil is another go to for us to bring back with us. The oil is known for its use in hair and skin products. Beyond cosmetics, it offers health benefits such as immune system support, cholesterol control, potential cancer-fighting properties, anti-aging effects, and wound healing. This naturally occurring plant oil is derived from the kernels of the fruit of the argan tree.

TEXTILES - Moroccan textiles are known for their aesthetic quality and durability, with a long history in the region. Each piece is often made from natural materials such as wool, cotton, silk, or linen. These textiles are prized for their rich heritage and symbolic designs. Its also hard for us to resist the one of a kind berber cushions or a colorful pair of babouches!

WOVEN ITEMS - These treasures are abundant and yet another form of intricate craftsmanship throughout our shopping day. Everything from breadbaskets to beach bags and shoppers, there are so many brightly colored chic treats. We love the hats that come in handy to shield from the sun and bags that are perfect for storing all of the things we pick up along the way. There are so many that are art pieces to display on their own!

OBJECTS - Decorative objects, so unique and instantly recognizable as a momento from such a memorable time in this magical city. From artisanal silver objects like the hands our founder Erin collects to the teapots, beads and perfume bottles, there is endless inspiration.

We hope you have enjoyed this little preview of all that awaits in Marrakesh! Come and join us for the retreat you will always remember!
