ACCOMMODATION

This 19th-century manor sits high on a hill overlooking vine-covered terraces with the Douro river gently flowing at its feet. It has been beautifully restored, with contemporary interiors reflecting both the region's rich heritage and the Six Senses design values. Spacious and comfortable rooms set within flourishing gardens and vineyards, seasonal food and exquisite wines from the valley, and a stunning Six Senses Spa await to lift your spirits and bring joy to your soul.

Now, it’s often considered to be one of the Best Hotels in Portugal and offers a sense of calm and awe away from any hustle and bustle. Aside from an almost 360-degree view of the river and surrounding vineyards, the woodland nearby is wonderful for those searching for a late afternoon walk.

The wonderful, layered landscape of the Douro Valley is rarely seen so perfectly as at Six Senses Douro, where the river meets the vineyards and there is nothing but space, fresh air and grapes around. As is often the case at a Six Senses property, the spa at the Douro Hotel is perfection; 10 treatment rooms look onto the garden, …and there's also an indoor pool with jets, an ice bath and a jacuzzi, plus saunas and steam rooms to encourage you to embrace the relaxed vibe of the hotel. — Conde Nast

ACTIVITIES

Not only will we take advantage of the amenities and beauty of our hotel and the Six Senses wellness experience, but we’ll enjoy some cultural activities on site and around the area. As this is one of our “REST + RESET” itineraries, we’ll put a high value on slower mornings and use of the extensive indoor spa facilities, including pool, saunas, steam rooms, and cold plunge. But in addition, following our elemental daily themes, we’ll explore a forest walking meditation in the nearby wooded trails overlooking the gorgeous Douro Valley, partake in a water ceremony on the shores of the Douro River, and take a guided walk to a beautiful wine estate to learn about this area’s vines and taste some of the nectar as well. On site, we indulge in an Aromatherapy Alchemy Workshop, a Food and Drink activity, and a visit to the site’s Greenhouse. Another evening, we’ll enjoy a Fire Ceremony, as well as Soundbath Meditation, plus two luxurious spa treatments during our time together.

*For those wishing to extend their stay either in Douro Valley, Porto, or other parts of Portugal, we can recommend a travel agent and add-on itineraries.

CUISINE

Healthful, vegetarian food is part of the retreat experience. Dining is locally sourced and an inspired culinary journey. The chefs at Six Senses Douro Valley offer a creative approach to their menus. Their restaurants showcase the bounty of Douro Valley produce harvested from our good earth, and they are a celebration of the region, with much of the produce coming from the verdant valley and surrounding countryside. An organic garden of vegetables and herbs is located right on the estate. Fresh ingredients are harvested only as needed, assuring ultimate freshness and flavor.

Our program includes daily breakfast and dinners and a couple of lunches. In addition, we will participate in an organic garden tour and cooking class, as well as a visit to a winery with tasting lunch.

*In the yogic tradition, meals on our retreats are vegetarian. When the company was founded, we wanted to create consistency and integrity within our yogic lineage as well as finding the most consistent way in each location to leave a light footprint. We know not all our guests are vegetarian, but we ask that they be open and understanding of the principles that guide this choice for just the few days that we are together. That said, breakfast is an open menu with all diets being represented, so there are usually options of meat / fish. Plus, a couple of the provided meals at sea-based locations will have an option for seafood, and of course guests can choose whatever they prefer from menus when we are on our own for a few meals during the week. Special allergies can be addressed and noted.

WELLNESS

Daily practices will be offered in a way to relax, stimulate, and help guests grow in the mindful nature of the trip. Classes are open to all levels, beginner to practiced, and can range from gentle, restorative, and vinyasa flow.* Plus meditations such as yoga nidra, guided meditation and a walking meditation will be offered. We will have the opportunity to spend mindful mornings taking our time, take personal quiet moments and work with meditations and journal prompts that we will provide for the week. Each day will be led with care as we slow-down, take care of our bodies, minds, and spirits through practices such as a Forest Bathing Meditation Walk, Sound bath Healing, Breath work, Water and Fire Ceremonies, as well as our daily movement. This off-season quiet winter week lends itself to be more mindful and intentional, and we will embrace just that as we experience the week and how we approach the itinerary.

Style and class levels will be determined and moulded to fit participating students' needs, and with a small intimate retreat class size, students will be able to get personalized attention and comfortability to deeply explore their practice.

ERIN LEWIS

Erin is the founder of EAT PRAY MOVE and loves to share the joy of travel with guests and finds that there is a yogic spirit of connection (to oneself, others, and the present moment) by traveling and experiencing new things. In addition to carrying this practice throughout the week and allowing our senses to be heightening with our activities, meals, and time together, Erin will also offer yoga to help us relax and restore and reconnect. Besides teaching in studios, Erin has led thousands of guests around the world for over 12 years on yoga retreats. She continues to evolve in her personal practice which naturally makes its way through her teaching. She loves sharing not only the asana (movement) limb of yoga with others, but also the many other facets which lead to life-changing shifts in our daily habits.

* Participation in classes and activities is optional throughout the retreat. All levels welcome!
